DiskCheckup is a hard drive testing program that monitors SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) attributes to view a drive's details over time to predict when it will fail.

You can also check disks for failures and view detailed information about a drive with DiskCheckup

More About DiskCheckup

The following SMART details can be read: Raw read error rate, spin up time, reported uncorrectable errors, power on time, load cycle count, temperature, command timeout, current pending sector count, total LBAs read, free fall protection, and head flying hours.

The best way to use DiskCheckup is to enable the Record SMART attributes for TEC computation option in the Configuration portion of the program. TEC stands for 'Threshold Exceeds Conditions,' and DiskCheckup will display the TEC date for each attribute.

Thresholds are not the same for every drive because they're set by the manufacturer of the hard drive. This means values for one hard drive may differ from the same attribute found on another.

Turning this feature on will enable a history of attributes to be kept and monitored by DiskCheckup. When enough past attributes are compiled, the program can estimate when some attributes will fall below their intended value, thus prompting you to consider replacing the drive.

The idea is that if too many of these attributes are spiraling out of control, a drive may have the potential to fail, causing you to possibly lose data.

From the Configuration page, you can choose an action on TEC. You can choose to have an email sent to one or more addresses, display a message, or do nothing.

In addition to the above, DiskCheckup can also run Disk Self Tests to check for drive failures, modify the size of the HPA and DCO areas of a drive, and display information like the interface type (like SATA), capacity, model number, serial number, geometry, standards compliances, and supported features.

Drives connected via SCSI or a hardware RAID will not work with DiskCheckup. This program only supports a drive that has SMART capabilities.

DiskCheckup officially works with Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2008/2003. I was also able to use it in Windows 10.

DiskCheckup Pros & Cons

DiskCheckup is a valuable program but does have a couple drawbacks:

Pros:

• Small download size
• Information can be exported to a TXT file
• Really easy to use
• Clearly, shows which drives are SMART-enabled

Cons:

• Hardware RAIDs are not supported
• SCSI connected drives are incompatible
• Free only for personal use

My Thoughts on DiskCheckup

DiskCheckup is a really nice program for monitoring when your hard drive may fail. I especially like the email notification feature because you may not always be in front of your computer to view the notification prompt.

Please know, however, that when you turn the TEC option on, the default option is to not prompt you when attributes fall below their acceptable value, something you may want to change if you're using DiskCheckup as a monitoring and prevention tool.

The SMART History tab, which shows past values of attributes, clearly shows the date and time of the records as well as the value. You must select each attribute individually to view it, which I don't like. It'd be nice to see all the values side by side their historical ones.
