Features

PLANAR TRACKING

The Academy Award-winning planar motion tracker

Planar tracking is at the heart of all Mocha modules and is used to drive tracking, roto-masking, object removal, and more. Unlimited tracking layers and the advanced AdjustTrack interface can handle reflections, occlusions, noise, and even areas with motion blur or low details.

PLUG-IN OPTION

Mocha Pro’s integrated plug-in option delivers a fast & efficient workflow using the host’s media engine. Launch Mocha from within your favorite editing and effects hosts.

Plug-in Support For:

  • Adobe After Effects & Premiere Pro
  • Avid Media Composer
  • Foundry NUKE
  • Blackmagic Design Fusion
  • Vegas Pro and HitFilm

ADVANCED ROTO AND MASKING TOOLS

New Magnetic & Freehand Spline Tools!

Mocha Pro is the ideal masking tool for effects or color correction. When linked to Mocha’s planar tracking, X-Spline & Bezier shapes inherit motion and perspective, dramatically reducing manual keyframe work.

Advanced tools for shape editing: per-point edge feathering, join layers tool, transform tool, group layers, and motion blur.

Mocha masking tools are also found inside Continuum & Sapphire filters!

REMOVE MODULE

Now with faster with GPU rendering!

Remove unwanted elements, wires, rigs, tracking marks, and 360 cameras. Generate clean plates for massive time-savings.

The Remove Module is an amazing alternative to traditional clone and paint techniques for getting rid of unwanted pixels and removing objects. It automatically detects temporal clean frames to blend and align pixels with little user input.

INSERT MODULE

Render accurate match moves and screen inserts with realistic motion blur or mesh warp distortions.

Render graphics onto your tracked screen surface within Mocha Pro 2019 or back to your host timeline with the new plug-in option. Combines with Lens Module for realistic VFX compositing on distorted footage.

STABILIZE

Smooth camera jitter and lock down shots.

The Stabilize Module can lock down camera motion or stabilize moving objects based on planar tracking. The smooth option with selectable anchor frames helps reduce high-frequency jitters while maintaining original camera motion. Center, scale or crop stabilized footage based on user-driven tracking.

LENS MODULE

Calibrate, correct, and remove lens distortion.

This simple and easy-to-use interface allows users to calibrate the distortion introduced by camera lenses. Unwanted lens distortion can be removed or matched for realistic compositing.

For 360/VR, a simplified undistort/distort workflow makes mono or stereo cleanups on equirectangular footage easy.

STEREOSCOPIC WORKFLOW

Stereo 3D planar tracking, masking, and object removal workflow

Mocha supports native stereo 3D and 360/VR stereo formats. This unique workflow uses planar tracking analysis on “both eye views” to reduce manual offsets and tedious keyframe work on stereo 3D rotoscoping, tracking, 3D camera solve, and object removal.

Mocha Pro 2019 is the ultimate companion for stereo 360 projects in Adobe After Effects & Premiere Pro.

3D CAMERA SOLVER

Solve 3D match moving capabilities with planar ease.

Unlike feature based camera tracking, Mocha solves the 3D camera based on user-selected planar data. This fast and easy-to-use solution is ideal for set extensions, 3D text, and particle tracking. Additionally, the 3D solver can be used to assist other 3D tracking applications on difficult shots with low detail or significant foreground occlusions.

360/VR POST-PRODUCTION TOOLKIT

Mocha Pro 2019 now includes all of the features from Mocha VR for mono and stereoscopic 360 video workflows.

Award-winning 360 video tools for tracking, masking, horizon stabilization, object removal, nadir patching and spherical video post.

The native 360 optimized workflow simplifies spherical video post-production challenges. Work across seams with less pre-comps, nesting or rendering.

New purchases also include the Continuum VR Unit. 5 multi-host plug-ins designed for 360° editorial & finishing.

360 PLANAR TRACKING

Tracking in Mocha is easy for 360 creators to learn. Robust planar tracking simplifies the workflow for advanced motion tracking, masking, object removal and horizon stabilization on 360 video projects.

Our patented “stereoscopic planar tracking” engine calculates disparity to ensure proper calibration and save hours of time on S3D post tasks.

Stereo Masks can be exported or rendered for color grading and effects.

STEREOSCOPIC 360 TOOLS

The unique stereo workflow uses planar tracking analysis on “both eye views” to solve disparity and reduce tedious duplication work on stereo rotoscoping, tracking, object removals, and stabilization. Work on a “hero” master view and the track and roto corrections ripple to the other eye view for reduced manual keyframing. Render back to the host or export stereo roto shapes back to a wide variety of hosts including Adobe, Nuke, and more.

As an integrated plug-in for hosts such as Adobe, Avid, and OFX, Mocha 2019 adds a practical stereo top/bottom workflow that does not require layer duplication or manual offsets. Supports common stereo formats: top/bottom, side-by-side, and multi-stream.

HORIZON STABILIZATION & REORIENT

Reduce shaky motion for improved VR headset viewing!

The Reorient Module drastically improves nausea-inducing VR experiences by smoothing or stabilizing shaky, handheld, and drone captured footage. Driven by robust planar tracking, a user can even track and stabilize difficult and “out of focus” footage. Reorient on its own can be used to reposition equirectangular footage.

360 OBJECT REMOVAL

New! GPU-accelerated Remove Module. Remove camera rigs, shadows, and unwanted pixels!

Mocha’s famous Remove Module now works on 360 videos by analyzing temporal frames and “automatically removing” unwanted for massive time-savings.

User-generated clean plates can be linked for removing when clean pixels are not detected in the shot. Illumination filtering analyzes luminance shifts for proper lighting and scene compositing.

LENS WORKFLOW FOR 360 COMPOSITING

The plug-in based lens correction workflow converts between lat/long and rectilinear for a simple workflow to add titles, graphics, patches, and non-360 enabled filters to your 360 projects.

Mocha Pro 2019 supports stereo an undistort/distort workflow for nadir patching and object removals.

NEW SPLINE TOOLS FOR ROTO & MASKING

Mocha’s powerful masking tools are improved with 4 new spline tools to speed up shape creation and save time on roto projects:

  • Magnetic Spline Tool with edge snapping
  • Freehand Spline for fluid drawing
  • New Ellipse and Rectangle Shapes

Don’t paint yourself into a corner, these masking tools are vector splines for continuous editing capabilities and speed on high-resolution projects.

NEW MOCHA ESSENTIALS INTERFACE

The updated interface makes Mocha easier to learn than ever before and looks great on hi-res and retina enabled monitors!

The Mocha Essentials Workspace brings the power of Mocha to novice level users with a simplified, elegant, and easy-to-learn interface.

Tracking & masking is now faster by reducing complexity and focusing the Mocha interface on the most essential icons and tools. Switch to Classic for advanced modules and customize workspaces for flexibility.

NEW GPU ACCELERATED OBJECT REMOVAL

Mocha’s amazing Remove Module has been rewritten to optimize GPU video hardware for up to 4-5x render speed improvements on removals and clean plating projects. For high-resolution 4K projects and 360/VR video resolutions, the resulting speed improvement is a massive time-saver. View our speed test!

Fix it in post! The Remove Module is one of the most popular reasons After Effects artists upgrade from the Adobe bundled Mocha AE CC. It’s like Content Aware on steroids!

360/VR FOR IMMERSIVE VIDEO WORKFLOWS

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 08a - Using Corner Pin Data in After Effects

There are a number of different ways to use corner pin data out of mocha and in After Effects. In this exercise we look at three of them; raw corner pin data, corner pin data with motion blur and corner pin data offset with Align Surface. The techniques shown here solve the most common problems people face bringing corner pin data in. We see how to deal with footage that is a different size or aspect ratio than our main composition. Plus how to use the Align Surface technique, which is useful for rig removal and background clean-up.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 03 - Planar Tracking

Starting a project in mocha, including tips on Pixel Aspect Ratio and handling interlaced footage. When tracking our first object, we see the importance of picking the right size shape to track. We also see the separation between the shape we track and the data that mocha gives us. A focus of this exercise are the tracking Parameters and how we adjust these to the footage we are tracking.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 09b - Stabilization in Final Cut Pro & Motion

This tutorial is all about Stabilization; how it can help us in mocha and how we can use the tracking data in Final Cut and Motion. The limitations in FCP are explored again and workarounds are discussed. Once again though, Motion gives us the flexibility and offers more solutions. We see how to add animation to Motion’s “Behaviors” to create a smoothed shot, which maintains the camera move but takes out the bumps.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 09a - Stabilization in After Effects

This tutorial is all about Stabilization; how it can help us in mocha and how we can use the tracking data in After Effects. We discuss how to shift narrative focus within a shot just by changing the shape that we build the stabilized effect on. This gives us a good deal of control in the scene. In After Effects we see the methods for stabilizing position, then scale and rotation using Expressions. We then work on creating a smoothed shot to maintain the camera move but take out the bumps. Along with this, we see some quick techniques for filling in missing edge details.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 04 - Track Mattes

When tracking objects, they will often get obscured by other things in the scene. We look at how we deal with tracking an object that disappears behind other shapes. We go into detail about the importance of track mattes and what order we track the shapes.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 06 - Shear and Perspective

One of the most frequent questions asked about mocha’s settings is, when do you have to turn on Perspective modeling instead of just tracking Shear? This exercise demonstrates the different motion using CG footage, then shows how to translate that to real-world footage. This effectively shows when Shear is not enough to get the best track and how Perspective tracking should be used. The second part of the tutorial demonstrates more techniques for dealing with large motion blur on the object you wish to track. We discuss shape size, placement and keyframing the shape to get the best results.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 05 - Rotation

Tracking rotation in an object can be tough, even with mocha’s planar tracker. It is made even trickier when tracking motion blur. This exercise discusses different techniques for getting the best track possible. When a solid track is not possible, we move to the AdjustTrack module to fix our data for the perfect match.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 07a - Using Transform Data in After Effects

This tutorial shows how to take the tracked footage in mocha and use that data in After Effects. We start with a simple matchmove. Then see how to get more flexibility through the smart use of Null objects and parenting. Finally we look at importing the same data directly into a Boris Continuum Complete lens flare plug-in.

This tutorial shows how to take the tracked footage in mocha and use that data in Apple Final Cut Pro & Motion. We start with a simple matchmove in Final Cut Pro and quickly see the limitations in the way it handles keyframes.Next we look at how to take the same data into Apple Motion. This is much more flexible and higher quality than working in FCP alone. Finally we take the project back into FCP to be used as part of the final edit.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 12 - Camera Solver - Pan Tilt Zoom

Before we look at mocha’s Camera Solver, we fix issues with incorrectly interpreted interlaced footage.Next we identify what the camera motion is in the shot, to correctly create the type of tracked layers required to create the virtual camera. In this tutorial the movement is Pan Tilt Zoom, so we prepare the main track layer plus a track matte layer. Once the camera is solved, we look at how to test it in After Effects using both a regular 3D text layer and a 3D particle layer.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 13 - Camera Solver - Parallax Change

This tutorial is about how to pick the right type of shapes to track for mocha to generate a 3D camera solve of a moving camera. The amount, size and placement of the track layers are crucial to getting good data. We look at how we improve the initial solve to add further tracked features and demonstrate how mocha’s Camera Solver differs from a regular 3D matchmaker.

In Depth: Motion Stabilization Options, Part 2 of 2

Sometimes using a tripod is not an option and you’re forced to shoot hand-held. Maybe you’re shooting in an amusement park, botanical gardens, or a concert and tripods are not allowed in. Unless you have the ability to stand perfectly still, you will likely need to stabilize the footage in postproduction. Motion stabilization is used to smooth footage and remove camera shake.

Curious Turtle Fundamentals of mocha - 14 - Camera Solver - Solving for Moving Shapes

Sometimes it is not possible to track a feature throughout the entire shot. In this tutorial we see how to get a good solve with features that move offscreen. We then see the possibilities for adding moving features to our tracked and solved camera. To test our solve we move to After Effects and check out the camera track and the object track.

Imagineer Systems Limited is a software company that specializes in the development and maintenance of several visual effects software applications. The company was founded in June 2000 by Allan Jaenicke and Philip McLauchlan[1]. The applications produced by Imagineer have been widely adopted within the entertainment industry, and can be seen in films such as X-Men: First Class, Alice in Wonderland and Black Swan[2].

History[edit]

Imagineer Systems Mocha Pro 4.0.0

Imagineer Systems was established in June 2000 by Allan Jaenicke and Philip McLauchlan[3]. The pair had been carrying out a joint research project at the University of Surrey in Guildford, United Kingdom, with the aim of applying the latest computer vision research to methods of editing moving images. Upon finding the uses of this algorithm in removing wires and harnessing from stunt scenes, the duo decided to found the company. Monkey, their first commercial software, was released shortly afterwards. Over the subsequent years, they would later release the programs Monet and Mocha, the latter of which would come to be adapted and come included with future versions of the editing software Adobe After Effects[4]. In 2012, Imagineer received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for its Imagineer System Planner, along with its tracking tools and rotoscoping software[5].
